Ministry of Food / khaddo montronaloy Histry: During the 2nd world war, Bangladesh, the then East Bengal, an eastern province of undivided India, fell into great famine in 1943. To feed and ensure availability of food for the people, Civil Supplies Department was commissioned by the Bengal provincial Govt. After the independence of india from the British rule in 1947, Civil Supplies Dept. Continued to Work under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, till 1971, in the then East Pakistan. Bangladesh got independence and emerged as a new born country in December 1971. Food Department has been continuing its activities on food management of the country under the Ministry of Food & Civil Supplies. Later, the ministry worked as Ministry of Food, Ministry of Food & Relief, Ministry of Food & Disaster Management, Food Division under the Ministry of Food & Disaster Management. Finally, by the order of Cabinet Division memo no. 04.425.022.02.01.002.2012-96 dated. 13 Sept 2012 merged as an independent Ministry of Food. However Vision, Mission, Allocation of Business and a brief of Operational Food management of the Core Department and Food security Institutional Settings are given bellows :
There were two divisions (1) Food (2) Disaster Management headed by a Minister named as Ministry of Food and Disaster Management. In December 2012,two different ministries were created by the Govt. Since then, Ministry of Food has been working headed by Minister.
Directorate General of Food is the only core Department under Ministry of Food and sole implementing body, working directly under guidance and supervision of the Ministry. DG Food is the head of the department and where there are 7 Directors are assisting him namely- Administration, Procurement, Supply Distribution and marketing,Accounting etc. having its field offices and warehouses throughout the country. Secretary Food is functioning as Principal accounting Officer of the ministry and also official head/Chief of the Ministry.Now there is no Division in the ministry but there are three WINGs 1.Administration and Development 2. Procurement and Distribution 3. Budget and Audit headed by Additional /Joint secretary working directly under the Secretary. There are many sections and Subsections headed by different Officers like Deputy secretary.Asst Secretary and subordinated staffs,all of them are assisting the secretary of Food. So ,now, Ministry of Food is the sole body to formulate and Execute overall Food policy management of Bangladesh.
